With all my experience in book publishing I am not going to tell you that this is an easy business, especially with the domination of players like Amazon. But if you pick a defensible niche, keep your overhead low, you could develop a decent business.
But that was 2007, and quite a bit has changed since then. Where a side business was once a novel idea, it has since become much more mainstream. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, freelancers now make up around 15% of the workforce, compared to only 7% in 1995. And the trend isn’t expected to stop here. The BLS reports that freelancers and self-employed individuals may comprise 20% of the workforce by 2020.
If you’re looking for new business ideas, the bamboo toothbrush niche is at an all-time high. It’s been maintaining high search volume for a few months now showing that this is one trend you need to jump on right now. Bamboo toothbrushes have risen in popularity due to growing interest reducing plastic. Toothbrushes are replaced every couple of months resulting in higher plastic waste which doesn’t biodegrade. Bamboo toothbrushes allow your customers to be more eco-friendly. There are many different directions in which you can take this business idea. Some have chosen to create a standalone bamboo toothbrush store. However, you can also create a general bamboo store. Or you can add these trending products to a teeth whitening products store.
Add catchy content to your site. Focus on your key areas of expertise, and display them professionally. Much like you would do when having potential employers contact references, put your best foot forward for potential clients. Include descriptions, where appropriate or necessary.
When people go on trips, they’re often concerned as to what will happen with their pets. That’s where you step in — offer yourself as a safe place to leave their pets, or be willing to go to their home to take care of their pets. In many cases, people are more than willing to pay a qualified pet sitter in order to avoid sending their pet to a professional kennel.
Bargain-hunt at yard and thrift sales. If you have a bit of knowledge in a particular area (ex. Taxco Mexican silver, action figures, classic National Geographics) or even just a good eye for quality, visit private sales early and often to find unexpected deals.
I’d also be more than happy to help out around the property —taking out the trash and recycling, clearing and cleaning the backyard, or any other duties that might need some attention. I love living here and hope that the relationship with you and the property is just beginning.
In my book business, we had up to seven full time publicists on staff, and yet we would still hire outside publicity firms to promote our books. Most publicity work is promotion work—getting attention for businesses and their products. Most publicity firms specialize, for example one firm may specialize in promoting high tech firms in Boston, another may specialize in promoting restaurants in Providence. Many of the national publicity firms I have used were founded by somebody who had previously had experience working at a media outlet. But this business isn’t rocket science…if you are good at networking and you can get promotion for your clients then you can succeed at this business.
Buy and sell domain names. If you’re good at finding popular yet undiscovered domain names, you can make some cash on the side by buying and reselling websites. Think of it as digital real estate speculation. Domains are available on GoDaddy.com for as little as $2.99 per year, but are sometimes resold at far higher prices: According to Business Insider, the site MM.com sold for $1.2 million dollars in 2014. Once you find the perfect domain name to resell, you can market it on Flippa.com for a flat fee.
All those phone calls you get from non-profits looking for donations…the majority of those calls aren’t from the non-profits themselves, they are from fund-raising firms. Yes, you could put together a phone solicitation service for non-profits, but fundraising is increasingly turning to inbound marketing. You could develop strategic inbound marketing plans and/or execute these plans for your customers.
Helping online businesses use paid campaigns to establish a Facebook presence is a fantastic way to make money online. However, even though the technical side of advertising on Facebook is made easy, it’s not exactly a cakewalk. You need skills to write copy that converts sales, conduct in-depth research on audience profiles, find the best times to promote, keep a close eye on result metrics and glean the proper insights. Of course, you also must have exceptional client communication.
When building campaigns, it’s also vital to use language that’s shareable and creative. Sales psychology is your friend. From his perspective, classic scarcity techniques have been around for centuries for a reason. “Try incorporating a quantity incentive: if you buy one, it’s full price; if you buy two, it’s 50 percent off and so forth.”
Many companies are looking for qualified candidates who know the ins and outs of Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to help them with their social marketing efforts. Head over to a job site and search for “social media marketing”.
Google Get Your Business Online is a program launched by Google in 2011 aimed at increasing the web presence of small businesses and cities by providing free advice on search engine optimization and helping business owners update their information on Google for free. The program started rolling out across the US in 2012. Partners in the program include the Association of Small Business Development Centers, SCORE and Intuit. A recent initiative of the program, entitled “Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map” was launched in March 2015. According to USA Today, “Google has generated customized websites for virtually every town and city in the U.S. to enable local businesses to learn to improve the information that shows up on Google search, Google maps and Google+.” It has been described as a community-based organization aimed at helping small businesses succeed on the Web by bringing community members, business owners, and local business leaders together. USA Today described the program as an “aggressive new program to help small businesses get found online.” The program includes access to additional online resources including mentoring and workshops. Local chambers of commerce have worked with Google in a partnering basis. In some instances, Google works with a website development service called Yola which helps businesses build and customize a website.

Referrals and showcasing your work in an online gallery are two keys to gaining new clients. If you don’t have a lot of experience in photography but still want to pursue this business idea, try working as an assistant to a professional photographer to build up your resume.
This is a nice little niche business with a strong personal service element and a market that’s not just looking for the cheapest product. Netting for railings, cabinet door catches, safety coverings for electric outlets, door locks…there are lots of safety elements that need to be changed to make houses safe for babies and toddlers. Do your research carefully and make sure you are not missing any safety elements.
Retain some control. If you upload photos of yourself (or friends/family with consent), it’s worth going for the ‘rights managed’ licence option – otherwise you’ll have little to no control over how your images are used. See Alamy’s page on understanding stock image licensing for more on the different types of licences.
You: “Listen, you know times are tough and I need to get a better deal to stick with you guys. You know and I know that your customer acquisition cost is hundreds of dollars. It just makes sense to keep me as a customer, so what can you do to offer me this plan for less money?”
About the list, this is extremely helpful. I know some coaches who are already earning a lot of money and would choose to get paid for the information that they know but you, you choose to share it to everybody else free of charge. Be a proud brethren of Christ because this is his very attitude. I say this is an act of love. May it be returned to you and your family a million fold.
